Over 50 million litres of water meant for Mumbai will be diverted to parts in Thane to relieve the water crisis.

The Thane civic authorities will be permitted to tap water from a pipeline that supplies water from the Bhatsa water reservoir to Mumbai. The BMC’s pipeline also runs along the Kopri over-bridge. It did not suffer any damages in the accident.

The Thane authorities had requested the BMC hydraulic department for the temporary connection as a relief measure. Dineshchandra Gondalia, hydraulic engineer, BMC, said that the impact on Mumbai’s water supply, owing to the decision, will be minimal. “Mumbai draws over 3,000 million litres of water daily. 50 million litres won’t make a huge difference. Right now Thane is facing a major water crisis and we must help them,” he said.

Thane will be allowed to tap water from the BMC’s pipeline till the damaged water main is restored.

KD Lala, city engineer TMC said, “Damaged water main will be restored in three days.”
