Upgrade to cloud technology delays property registrations in Mumbai and state

In order to initiate property and land registration that is speedy and, hassle-free Maharashtra government has shifted its property-registration from overloaded and outdated servers to cloud technology. The technology transfer may impact the speed and delay day today property registration.

A senior government official from the stamp duty and registration department informed that the department used to face severe problems due to frequent server breakdowns in the earlier setup. The Maharashtra stamp duty and registration department have informed people through displaying the notice at all registration offices that the registration from January 7, may get slow down due to change in the technology apparatus. Hence, users should bear trouble till the new cloud technology is updated.

In Maharashtra, yearly 23 lakh property registration is carried out while per day, the registrations numbers are 8000 that includes 3000 property registration from Mumbai and Thane.

However, people turning up for registration have a different story to tell.

Ramesh Jambhle, a resident of Panvel had recently bought few acres of land recently. He recalls as to how he had to make several rounds to the property registration department. "We were kept on waiting. They did not provide the right information as well. If any such major changes are going to take place, the government should inform the people either through the media or advertisements. We literally wasted ten days for the property registration. We hope the government takes some lesson from this breakdown," complained Jambhale.

"Buyers and sellers have to spend a lot of time at the registration office. The technology has to be updated regularly so that we increase speed as well have the global competitive edge. Our old servers were woefully inadequate to save and store heavy document files. We need to use cloud technology to have unlimited space. It will make our work easy and the people will also not face any trouble," informed the official requesting anonymity.

"We have selected ESDL firm to shift this data on the cloud. There were five companies which are empanelled with the government. We chose one of them to shift this metadata. We have around 180 TB data at our Mahape centre which we have shifted. The current software was getting outdated. In the cloud, we will get enough data and it can also be expanded as per our need and usage," said the official requesting anonymity.
