Over the years, Samsung, Motorola, HTC and Apple are just some of the companies that I have seen going for bigger screens when it comes to their flagship phones. I have been using the OPPO R7 Plus for a couple of months now, it has been my companion while travelling through three different countries and a few cities within the country. During my time with the phone, something changed about the way I consumed content that I did not expect.

While I did have a laptop with me at most times, I was reading and watching more on my phone. I have used a four-inch phone for about three years prior to this and this never happened.

When I analysed further, I came to the result that this has to do with a few things. The smartphone has evolved significantly over the years and though it may never be my primary computing device, it happens to be something I have on me all the time and is also fairly powerful. I now rely on my smartphone for email, messaging, keeping in touch with friends, photography, and staying up to date with the news. These are only a handful of things compared to what you can do with a smartphone or what people that use the smartphone as their primary computing device are able to do.

Everything I use my phone to do has become better with better thanks to the bigger screen size. My photography on my phone is better thanks to better composition being possible. Keeping in touch with friends is also an experience that benefits with a bigger screen while on video call. I have also found that phones with bigger screens are easier to type with as each individual key on the touchscreen keyboard is easier to press without accidentally pressing the wrong key, hence using my email on the phone is a lot easier. For people who game or watch movies on their phones, there is even more value when it comes to a bigger screen size.

Mobile phones are also devices that make the best use of the screen size. The major reason I think this is true is because you can easily rotate your phone to be perfect for what you are doing. Written content doesn't usually look the best on a widescreen monitor or laptop as most of the space around the text is not used and there is a lot of unnecessary space . Mobile phones don't have that problem, you can hold the phone vertically and you utilise all the space provided for written content and simply rotate again to enjoy widescreen video.

Mobile phones are going to play a big role in VR in the future and we can already see that with the VR bundles that are already available with mobile phones in the market today. Mobile phones with a 5 to 6 inch screen size are almost universally compatible with these headsets while some headsets might not support smaller or bigger phones.

Overall, I would say that after moving to a bigger screen I cannot ever see myself going back. Even though my next phone might not be as big as the 6-inch OPPO R7 Plus but it will be between the 5 to 6-inch range.
