Centre, state should play constructive role in Kashmir: All India Milli Council

Expressing concern at the continuing "unrest" in Kashmir, the All India Milli Council (AIMC) today asked the protesters in the Valley to come to the negotiating table to solve the issue and asked the Centre and state to play a more "constructive role" to restore normalcy there.

"We request the people of Jammu and Kashmir to stop the violence and come to talks to address their genuine concerns,"
Mohd Manzoor Alam, AIMC general secretary, said at a press
conference here.

He said the continuing presence of army was "irritating" people.

A democratic state should heed to the demands of its citizens, Alam said, adding it would be construed as "weakness" otherwise.

The Centre and State should play a constructive role (in
ensuring normalcy returned), he said.

Explaining AIMC's stand on the Women's Reservation Bill, he called for sub-quota, saying, it would allow members of communities including Muslim, send more representatives to
Parliament and other legislative bodies.

"We want quota within quota otherwise it will only empower already empowered groups," he said. 

Welcoming chief minister M Karunanidhi's proposal to implement prohibition in the state, he said the DMK president must remain resolute and go ahead with it.

Alcoholism was resulting in issues including domestic violence, he said.
