In the early 90s, as a generation of young actress vied to establish themselves, the audiences were introduced a number of starlets. As the likes of Kajol, Raveena Tandon, Shilpa Shetty, and Mamta Kulkarni sought to be the number one actress, one young star moved ahead of them all. Karisma Kapoor, daughter of Randhir Kapoor and Babita, was part of some of the highest-grossing films in the mid-90s. But her married life was in stark contrast to the success on screen.

Karisma Kapoor’s stellar run at the box office

In the 90s, Karisma starred in a string of hits starting with Anari in 1993, and including Raja Babu, Coolie No 1, Jeet, Raja Hindustani, Dil To Pagal Hai, Judwaa, Hero No 1, Biwi No 1, and Hum Saath Saath Hain. By the late-90s, till she was surpassed by Kajol, she was considered the numero uno in actresses of her generation, and certainly bigger than ‘juniors’ like Aishwarya Rai, Sushmita Sen, and Rani Mukerji. In 2000s, Karisma switched to more serious roles, doing Fiza and Zubeidaa before making her TV debut with soap opera Karishma: The Miracles of Destiny (2003–2004). Following this, she married businessman Sunjay Kapur and took a break from acting.

Karisma Kapoor’s horror marriage

Karisma and Sunjay have two children in a marriage that lasted 13 years. In 2015, they filed for divorce through mutual consent and the divorce was finalised the following year. In the court case, details about their marriage emerged that shocked one and all. It was alleged that Sunjay was physically, sexually, and emotionally abusive towards Karisma. The court also heard that Sunjay humiliated her and would try to ‘auction’ her off to his friends on occasions. Karisma has maintained silence on the matter.

Karisma Kapoor’s career now

Barring a few cameo appearances, Karisma’s only film in the 2010s was Dangerous Ishq, which released in 2012 and was a box office bomb. Around this time, the actress turned to TV and began judging reality shows. She has worked in Nach Baliye and now judges India’s Best Dancer. She made her acting comeback with the 2020 web series Mentalhood, followed by the 2024 Netflix film Murder Mubarak.
