We all fondly remember the artists we see on screen in movies, however, the artists behind the screen who do the real magic often go unnoticed. Gorakh Sharma, the legendary guitarist who created the iconic theme song of Karz is not known by many.

Gorakh Sharma is the son of a renowned trumpeter Pandit Ramprasad Sharma who taught him the basics of music. He mastered the art of reading music notations and the art of playing various string instruments from him. Gorakh Sharma has played the mandolin, mandola, rubab, and numerous types of guitars like the acoustic, jazz, twelve-string, and electric guitar. Not only this, he was the first to have played the Bass guitar in the Indian film industry. He is the younger brother of Pyarelal (Laxmikant–Pyarelal Duo).

He began his musical career at the age of 14 as a mandolin player. He then went on to learn guitar from Anibal Castro, who was a known guitarist and became a trained, unique guitarist whose mandolin playing ability when merged with guitar did magic. He was initially a part of a small group named Baal Sureel Kala Kendra which would go to small cities to perform. The group consisted of Meena Mangeshkar, Usha Mangeshkar, and Hridaynath Mangeshkar, along with Laxmikant Kudalkar, his brothers Pyarelal, Ganesh, Anand, and others.

Later in the 1960s, at the age of 14, Gorakh Sharma got the opportunity to play mandolin and work with director Ravi on the song, Chaudhvin Ka Chaand. Soon he started working with music directors like Ravi, Shankar-Jaikishen, and Kalyanji Anandji.

At the time when the musicians were paid only according to their grades by the Cine Musicians Association, he along with Pandit Shivkumar Sharma and Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia were the only musicians who were given the top grade rating.

He has worked on over 1000 songs and made special tunes for over 500 films including Shah Rukh Khan, Sunny Deol, Juhi Chawla-starrer Darr, Karz, and Aashiqui. All of these were hit films and their music was also loved by the audience.

Some of his famous songs in which he created his magic include Jaadoo Teri Nazar, Saason Ki Zaroorat Hain Jaise, Ek Hasina Thi, Hum Bane Tum Bane, Main Shayar Toh Nahin and Mere Mehboob Qayamat Hogi among others.
