When discussing the wealthiest and most prominent individuals in India, Mukesh Ambani and Gautam Adani are often the first names that come to mind. These modern business tycoons are well-known for their wealth and fortune. However, there was another Indian who maintained the standard for lavishness and creativity even before they were well-known. The first Indian to own a private jet was Maharaja Bhupinder Singh of Patiala.

The first Indian to purchase an aircraft was Maharaja Bhupinder Singh of Patiala, who did so in 1910 from the United Kingdom. From 1900 until 1938, Maharaja Bhupinder Singh ruled over the princely kingdom of Patiala in Punjab. On October 12, 1891, he was born in Patiala at the Moti Bagh Palace. Maharaja Rajinder Singh I of Patiala was the father of Maharaja Bhupinder Singh, and Jasmer Kaur was his mother.

Maharaja Bhupinder Singh studied at Aitchison College and, following his father's death on November 9, 1900, at the age of nine, assumed the title of Maharaja of Patiala state.

After buying the aircraft, Maharaja Bhupinder Singh had an airfield constructed in Patiala. Not only did Maharaja Bhupinder Singh lead a luxurious lifestyle, but he also played cricket. One of the top teams in cricket at the time was his Patiala XI team.

1911 saw the Indian cricket team travel to England under the leadership of Maharaja Bhupinder Singh. In first-class cricket, he participated in 27 matches between 1915 and 1937. He was also a member of the Marylebone Cricket Club for the 1926–1927 season. In 1932, Maharaja Bhupinder Singh was selected to lead India during its inaugural Test tour of England, but he was unable to travel because of a medical condition.

In 1917, the State Bank of Patiala was established by Maharaja Bhupinder Singh. The Maharaja had a reputation for amassing medals. Maharaja Bhupinder Singh was believed to have driven around in a cavalcade of twenty Rolls Royce vehicles.
