A major political storm has hit Jammu and Kashmir over National Security Advisor (NSA) Ajit Doval’s remarks that a separate constitution for the militancy-plagued state was an “aberration”.

While all major political parties have denounced the remarks as “politically motivated”, the BJP has openly backed the views of the NSA.

Speaking at the launch of a book on Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, Doval said having a separate constitution for Jammu and Kashmir was probably an “aberration”.

“Probably with Jammu and Kashmir, where the Constitution was...in a truncated form...another constitution of J&K continued to exist, which is an aberration,” Doval said at the event at Vivekananda International Foundation (VIF), a think-tank.

Main Opposition National Conference reacted sharply saying if a separate constitution is an aberration, then the accession too is an aberration. “We have not merged but acceded to the union of India. This is very unfortunate statement from the NSA. It is a politically motivated statement,” said Ali Mohammad Sagar, general secretary of Opposition National Conference.

Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) led by Mehbooba Mufti went a step further saying the special status to Jammu and Kashmir is neither a gift nor alms from New Delhi but a legal right of the people of the state.

“J&K was a Muslim majority state and we could have acceded to Pakistan, but we chose secular India. We got a separate constitution and special status. It is neither a gift nor alms. We extended a hand to the Hindu majority India despite being a Muslim majority state. They (India) should have appreciated it and they should have felt blessed and gifted,” said Rafi Ahmad Mir, chief spokesman of PDP.

Congress questioned the timing of the statement saying they (government) is trying to divert the attention from the real issues because they have only a few months left to rule.
