“Bollywood dances are high on emotion. It helps to understand the meaning of the lyrics of the song. The defining emotion of the song Jai Ho is that of triumph, and the phrase jai ho is literally a victory shout that means ‘it rocks!’ explains a tutorial on www.ehow.com, an online knowledge source that gives you step-by-step instructions on how to do just about everything. The routine has been rated ‘moderately difficult’ on the website.

Freida Pinto and Dev Patel’s dance sequence during the end credits of the Oscar-winning Slumdog Millionaire is steadily gaining cult status in the United States. It all started with Patel and Pinto’s recent appearance on the Emmy-award winning Ellen DeGeneres Show that had the whole cast and crew grooving to the number on cue. Patel also had the opportunity to teach Tyra Banks how to boogie on her talk show.

Over the past few weeks, along with proud parents uploading dance videos by their children, dancers creating their own remixed versions (including a belly-dance-based Jai Ho by elderly women who call themselves the ‘Slumdog Grandmas’) a number of dance tutorials have sprung up.

A rather interesting tutorial on YouTube by Ginger Kozlowski teaches a ‘Jai Ho line dance performance’, a dance that follows a sequence of steps and usually is done in lines and rows.

The dance is broken down into easy-to-follow parts. She has also managed to upload a beginner level version and intermediate version of the routine.

“When I saw the dance at the end of Slumdog Millionaire, I felt inspired to adapt it for line dancing, a passion and hobby of mine. I uploaded four videos by breaking it down and making it easy for the audience to learn,” she says. Her videos have received over 43,000 views in the past few weeks.

Angie Hernandez a.k.a. The Jai Ho Dancer uploaded her own video while doing the number around three weeks ago. The video has her doing her own version. In the background is a teenager’s typical room complete with posters and clothes hanging off the walls. She had no idea then that people would approach her then to learn the dance themselves.  “I recently saw the film Slumdog Millionaire, and the dance at the end was so captivating and fun. It was different from what I am used to. The dance looked fairly simple, and I loved it so much that I decided to teach myself.” Today most of her friends and people online have decided to learn the dance from her, meet up and post a video with everybody performing.

With Bollywood stars dancing on the number at film award shows and political parties trying to buy rights to make it their official slogan, it looks like that Jai Ho has long way to go.
