The much-awaited third season of Mirzapur released last week on Amazon Prime Video. The crime thriller set in UP’s heartland has captivated audiences since its first season came out five years ago. As the first reactions to season 3 come in, the show’s lead star Ali Fazal sits down with DNA for a chat about the show and his character’s arc.

Mirzapur 3 sees Ali’s character Guddu Pandit go from vengeful goon to the self-proclaimed King of Mirzapur, lording over East UP’s drug and arms trade. His character also descends from being likable to unhinged. Talking about the range he got to play with Guddu in season 3, Ali says, “I like what I managed to dive into, or rather what the collaborators allowed me to. It was very welcoming for me that Gurmeet allowed that space for me to bring in some interesting ideas. I felt that was the only way to show this manic deterioration of his mind of a person who has just started to use his brain, get into his own. But then it’s a total dismantle. Then you realise it’s not just him.”

The first reactions to Mirzapur 3 were mixed with many praising Ali and co-star Vijay Varma but also criticising the plot. “I have seen a few reactions so far and they have been nice. But there have been a few where logon ne gaali bhi di hai mujhe (people have abused me). So, I honestly don’t know what to feel right now,” Ali says with a laugh.

A full day had not passed since the release of Mirzapur 3 when fans had already began asking when season 4 would come out. Ali laughs when we ask him this but as we mention the fans’ love for the show, Ali says, “It’s scary that something that people get latched on to becomes an addiction. You yourself become a demon and start demanding it to a point where you feel ‘I don’t care about anything else’. If people could have it their way, they would put live TV there (in Mirzapur).” So, is a combination of Bigg Boss and Mirzapur on the cards, we ask him in jest. “Please, don’t ever say that again,” Ali says laughing, with folded hands.

Mirzapur also stars Pankaj Tripathi, Anjumm Sharma, Shweta Tripathi Sharma, Vijay Varma, Rasika Dugal, Harshita Gaur, Isha Talwar, Lilliput, Priyanshu Painyuli, Anangsha Biswas and Neha Sargam. The third season began streaming on July 5 on Prime Video.
