Heavy rains today lashed many regions of northern India, including parts of Uttar Pradesh where two children were killed and two others injured in separate incidents of wall collapse in Lakhimpur district.

Incessant rains in Lakhimpur led to two incidents of wall collapse, killing two children and injuring a man and a woman.

Rains were also recorded in Jammu and Kashmir where the mercury nosedived after the showers, bringing relief to people.

Srinagar, summer capital of the state, recorded a high of 26.6 degree celsius -- 3.4 degrees below normal -- thanks to a wet day.

The night temperature also dipped to 15.9 degrees, 1.1 degrees below normal.

Showers were also experienced in Jammu, where the high was recorded at 30.4 degrees and the low at 23.1 degrees. The maximum was nearly three degrees below normal while the minimum temperature was two degrees below the usual, the Met office said.

Rains also continued to lash many parts of Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh for the second day today, causing temperatures to dip in the region between one to five degrees below normal.

Amritsar was drenched by 51.6 mm of rainfall and the maximum temperature settled at 34.2 degrees while Ludhiana received 34 mm of rains.

The maximum settled at 30.1 degrees in Patiala where it rained 26.6 mm. Chandigarh had 24 mm of rainfall followed by 16.6 mm at Ambala and 15 mm at Karnal.

While the day temperature in Chandigarh was recorded at 28 degrees, the maximum in Karnal stood at 30.5 degrees.

In Himachal Pradesh, overnight rains led to a fall in temperatures. State capital Shimla recorded 30.1 mm rains and the high in the Queen of the Hills dropped to 20 degrees, a drop of 3.3 degrees as compared to yesterday.

The Met office said 5.4 mm of rainfall was measured in Sundernagar where the maximum was recorded at 25.1 degrees. Dharamsala, which received 45.6 mm in rains saw the mercury dip to 25.4 degrees.

However, in Rajasthan the second phase of the South-West weakened today after a week of rains as only Baran and Bharatpur districts received light to moderate showers.

Atru in Baran and Nagar in Bharatpur district recorded a maximum rainfall of 5 cm and one cm respectively.

The Met office said temperatures rose in most parts of the state.
