The cash-strapped BMC somehow seems to have unlimited funds for debris removal and minor demolitions.

It has spent Rs13 lakh on demolition and debris removal of five rooms in Bhandup (S-ward). Now, after spending it, Vasant Patwardhan, assistant municipal commissioner of
S-ward, has tabled the proposal in the standing committee for approval.

“Such huge expenditure for such small works should be monitored by a senior officer. How can the official first spend it and then seek sanction?” asked Ashish Shelar, BJP group leader in the BMC.

Patwardhan has spent Rs1.80 lakh to demolish a room at Lote Chawl, Rs2.94 lakh to break a balcony, Rs2.95 lakh and Rs3.97 lakh to demolish a room at Water Tank Road and Tarabai Nivas at Bhandup respectively, and Rs1.25 lakh to remove debris from Milind Nagar nullah.
