The co-founder and CEO of Unacademy Gaurav Munjal is making headlines after the Edtech startup reportedly laid off 250 employees. There were also reports suggesting about company’s potential merger with another online platform.

However, Munjal took on X to deny all the reports of a possible merger or acquisition by saying "ignore the rumours." He further claims that Unacademy is on the path to having its best year in terms of growth and profitability.

“There is a lot being said about Unacademy currently. To set the record straight, Unacademy will have its best year in terms of growth and profitability. We also have many years of runway. We are building Unacademy for the long run. Ignore the rumours,” the Unacademy CEO wrote on X.

Born in Mumbai, India, Munjal completed his education at Jamnabai Narsee School. He later earned a computer engineering degree from NMIMS University.

When he studied in Class 12, he began coding and took the initiative to set up his first YouTube channel. Through this platform, he would make content that involved teaching about Java programming and other technical topics. Over time, this YouTube channel transformed into what we now know as Unacademy, becoming popular among many students.

Gaurav Munjal had always desired to embark on the journey of entrepreneurship. After finishing his engineering, he founded an app called Flatchat. He also worked as a software developer at Directi.

While working at Flatchat and Directi, Gaurav kept uploading videos on his YouTube channel, Unacademy. Seeing the potential, Munjal’s friend Roman Saini also came on board to help him grow the YouTube channel. Their vision was to transform the channel into an effective learning platform.

In 2015, Gaurav Munjal, Hemesh Singh, Roman Saini, and Sachin Gupta, co-founded Unacademy. They aimed to offer high-standard educational content for diverse competitive examinations like UPSC, NEET, JEE, and GATE.

Unacademy saw impressive growth, with a large number of educators joining within a few months. Under the guidance of CEO Munjal, Unacademy grew as one of India’s leading ed-tech platforms. In 2022, Munjal also received an income of Rs 1.58 crore in 2022. As per reports, Unacademy boasts a whopping valuation of $3.44 billion (Rs 28710 crore approximately).
