“Nothing irks me more than the closed door of a library,” said Barbara Tuchman once. This is specifically true in a city like Mumbai which has very few public libraries.

The remaining libraries that operate run under strict guidelines which include time restrictions. Sometimes the timing become a detriment to some studious pupils, who may want to burn the midnight oil.
Moreover, the city has a large population that works during the day to support their education and finds time only at night for academic study.

They would rather have a library that is open at odd hours. Considering the requirement of such pupils who need study rooms during the night, the Shukla library at Vile Parle keeps the lights on through the night. “This place is a paradise to people like me, who have to work to earn a livelihood during the day and find the time to study only during the night," said Vikas Aggarwal, a student doing his chartered accountancy training.

Aggarwal works at a computer accountancy firm during the day and juggles that with his apprenticeship with a practising chartered accountant.

The library is a boon for several people like Aggarwal. Several avail the facilities for a nominal fee.

Initially the library was started for medical students by Ramesh Shukla, proprietor of a coaching class. But later Shukla threw it open for students of all other disciplines, who need a quiet place to study.

The library has a collection of more than 8,500 books on medicine, scientific journals, reference literature and academic compact discs. Users can also bring other reading material to study or use the internet facility, which is free for members.

The library has two branches. One is  in Vile Parle and another is in Goregaon. The ambience of the library has been  created entirely in keeping the readers' requirement in mind.

Moreover the study room is air-conditioned and spacious. Wi-Fi internet facility on computers and laptops is also available.
“There are various hurdles that a student faces in his life,” said Shukla.

He added, “But one a major obstacle is the lack of a proper area for academic study. I felt many students just fail their college exams or don't crack their engineering or medical entrance exams because they don't get right ambience to study.”
