Late last year, Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s Animal broke the bank with record box office collections. The film was important as it marked a rare occasion when a hyperviolent film ruled the roost in India. For a while, it was hailed as the most violent Indian film ever made. But now, that crown has been lifted off the film’s head, and passed on to a worthy successor, a film that has even Hollywood raving about it.

India’s most violent film

Nikhil Nagesh Bhat’s upcoming film Kill has been described as India’s most violent film to date. The film stars Lakshya as an army commando taking on a gang of bandits in a train. The film features several scenes of extreme violence, lots of blood and gore, and even scenes of people on fire and beheadings. This has created quite a lot of intrigue in the film. In the US, where the film was premiered last year at festivals, the film is rated R for violence and gore. Not many Indian films have had this rating in the West earlier.

Why is Kill so violent?

In a chat with DNA, Kill’s director Nikhil Bhat justified the violence and gore in it. “Honestly, Kill is a very emotional story. It's a story about a lot of relationships, and about how these relationships are tested in this strange journey. Within a matter of two to three hours everything changes for all these people. The violence and the gore is by-product of all strains on these relationships. Kill, for me, has definitely the goriest action never. But having said that, actually the emotion and the action is very well balanced.” Kill is releasing worldwide on July 5.

Other violent Indian films

There have been several other Indian films in the recent past that have been called ‘most violent ever’. Apart from Animal, last year also saw the release of Nagarjuna’s Telugu action thriller Ghost, which was billed as most violent Telugu film. The Tamil vigilante film Anniyan (released in Hindi as Aparichit) was also among the most violent Indian films of the time. Other films known for their extreme violence and gore are Gangs of Wasseypur, Bandit Queen, and KGF Chapter 2.
