The newly-elected Members of Parliament (MPs), including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, will take an oath at the inaugural session of the 18th Lok Sabha Today. The Speaker will then be elected, and President Droupadi Murmu will address a joint sitting of both Houses.

With the general elections held in April and June, this will be the first Lok Sabha session. While the BJP has 240 seats in the 18th Lok Sabha, it is still shy of the majority threshold of 272, with 293 seats held by the NDA. With Congress holding 99 seats, the Opposition INDIA group has 234 members.

At 11 am, Prime Minister Modi and his Council of Ministers will take an oath. The other Council of Ministers will take an oath following PM Modi. The MPs from the several states will then take the oath in alphabetical order after that. This implies that the legislators from West Bengal would take the oath of office last, followed by the newly elected representatives from Assam.

A total of 280 recently elected Members of Parliament (MPs) will take the oath of office on Monday, June 25. Included in this group are Prime Minister Modi and his Council of Ministers.

The dispute surrounding Bhartruhari Mahtab's selection as pro tem Speaker, a BJP leader and seven-term member, is expected to cloud the proceedings. The Opposition, who claimed that the administration disregarded Congressman Kodikunnil Suresh's claim to the seat, has criticised the action.

Mahtab will be sworn in as the pro tem Speaker of the Lok Sabha at Rashtrapati Bhawan on Monday by President Droupadi Murmu. After arriving at Parliament, Mahtab would declare the Lok Sabha adjourned at eleven a.m.

In honour of the inaugural sitting of the 18th Lok Sabha, MPs will observe a moment of silence to start the proceedings. The list of members elected to the Lok Sabha will thereafter be placed on the table of the House by Lok Sabha Secretary General Utpal Kumar Singh.

The Opposition is expected to press the government on a number of issues, including price increases, food inflation, deaths as a result of an unprecedented heat wave, and the most recent instances of irregularities in the conduct of examinations, which have agitated students and cast doubt on the efficacy of institutions tasked with conducting exams.
