The Union Cabinet on Wednesday gave its ex-post facto approval for the allocation of foodgrains to migrants for two months free of cost.

The decision was taken in a meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi that began at 11 am on Wednesday.

Through the allocation, approximately 8 crore migrants, including those who are stranded in different parts of the country will get 5 kg of foodgrains every month for the months of May and June.

An official statement said that it would entail an estimated food subsidy of about Rs 2,982.27 crore. Additionally, the expenditure towards intra-state transportation and handling charges and dealer’s margin will account for about 127.25 crore which will be borne fully by Central Government, it read.

Accordingly, the total subsidy from the Government of India is estimated at about of Rs.3,109.52 crore, it added.

Last week, Union Minister of Consumer Affairs and Food & Public Distribution Ram Vilas Paswan had announced that it will distribute free food grains and pulses to over 8 crore migrant labourers who are not covered under the National Food Security Act or State Scheme Public Distribution System (PDS) cards at 5 kg per month for two months.

The minister had informed that the states/UTs have been requested to put in place a mechanism to share their details after fully distributing allocated food grains, with the Department of Food and Public Distribution, by and large on the pattern adopted in the case of PMGKAY.

The allocation will ease the hardships faced by the migrants due to the economic disruption caused by the coronavirus pandemic.
