Three new criminal laws came into effect in the country on Monday, bringing far-reaching changes in India's criminal justice system. These three laws are -- The Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) and the Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam (BSA).

The earlier laws that were in force in the country since the British era are now a thing of the past. BNS has replaced IPC 1860, BNSS has come into force in place of CRPC 1973. The Indian Evidence Act 1872 has been replaced by BSA.

Although many new sections have been added to the new Criminal Laws and changes have been made in the punishment in the definition of many crimes, there are two big things in the new Criminal Laws. One is that under the new laws, the verdict in criminal cases will come within 45 days of the completion of the trial. And secondly, the charge sheet will have to be filed within 60 days of the first hearing.

An interesting thing about the new laws is that now you will not be able to call anyone 420. And neither will section 302 be mentioned in murder cases in films. Because till now, IPC section 302 has been applied in murder cases. But now section 103 of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) will be applied.

In the case of attempted murder, 109 will be applied instead of 307. In the case of fraud also, BNS 318 will be applied instead of IPC 420. The new laws came into force at 12 midnight on June 30. In the morning, the news came that the first case under the new law has been registered against a street vendor in Delhi. But later it was found out that the Delhi case was not the first case registered under the new law.

The first case under the new law was registered in Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh. It was related to a bike theft, in which section 303 of BNS has been imposed. In the old law, section 379 was imposed in the case of theft.
