While acting is all about performing arts, there is no denying that one’s looks and appearance plays an important role in success. It is a visual medium, after all. This has led to many actors being focussed on their looks and even facing insecurities over that. One example is this superstar, who was so bogged down by his skin colour that he even considered becoming a villain.

The star who had complex over his dark skin

Mithun Chakraborty, the dusky actor, graduated from the Film and Television Institute of India in the mid-70s. During his stay there, he was worried he would never get good roles due to his dark skin tone. Shabana Azmi, his senior at FTII, recently revealed on Arbaaz Khan’s celebrity talk show The Invincibles Series, “I remember he used to come to our house. He was very conscious of the fact that his complexion was not fair and his teeth were like this (she meant he had jutting teeth). My mummy used to hug him tight and say, ‘Don’t worry about such things; you dance so well’.”

When Mithun Chakraborty wanted to be a villain

Mithun himself once admitted that he had a complex about his skin colour. In an earlier interview with Komal Nahata, he said that he considered becoming a villain as he was convinced nobody would let him become a hero. “Since my complexion was such, I also got a complex about it. So, I thought, I can’t change my skin tone, but I can play a villain in movies. I went to the film institute and came back with good training,” the actor had said.

However, as he went to Bombay to try his hand in films, he found that there were indeed takers for his art and talent. He made his debut with Mrigayaa in 1976 and won the National Film Award for Best Actor for his performance. His biggest success came in the form of the 1982 blockbuster Disco Dancer. The film was a big success in India, earning over Rs 6 crore. But in the Soviet Union, it was a phenomenon, breaking all earning records. By the end of its run, Disco Dancer earned Rs 100 crore worldwide, becoming the first Indian film to do so.
