Nag Ashwin’s dystopian sci-fi epic Kalki 2898 AD is showing no signs of stopping. The film has grossed over Rs 700 crore worldwide (or Rs 640 crore, depends on which source you refer to) in just seven days of release. This means that the film has surpassed the lifetime earnings of some of the biggest Indian films ever even before its first week at the ticket window has ended.

Kalki 2898 AD stars Amitabh Bachchan, Prabhas, and Deepika Padukone, alongside Kamal Haasan and Disha Patani. The film borrows elements from Mahabharata to script a tale about Lord Vishnu’s tenth avatar in a dystopian Kashi in the 29th century. The film saw the third-biggest opening by any Indian film ever and built on that opening via positive word of mouth. By Wednesday night, Kalki 2898 AD had earned Rs 392 crore net in India in all languages, beating the first week collection of Shah Rukh Khan’s Jawan and only behind SS Rajamouli’s Baahubali 2 and RRR.

Sacilk puts the film’s seven-day global earnings at just under Rs 650 crore while the makers – Vyjayanthi Films – say it is an even Rs 700 crore. In either case, the film has crossed the lifetime collections of two Prabhas films – Baahubali 1: The Beginning (Rs 625 crore) and Salaar (Rs 617 crore). If the Rs 700-crore figure is indeed accurate, then it means that Kalki has also crossed Gadar 2’s Rs 691 crore mark. Thursday marks the film’s eighth day in theatres, the last in its extended opening week. Trade insiders predict the film will add Rs 35-40 crore worldwide on Thursday, inching closer to the Rs 1000-crore mark.

The next big target for Kalki 2898 AD at the box office will be 2.0 (Rs 744 crore), Animal (Rs 917 crore), and the Rs 1000-crore mark. The Nag Ashwin film should be able to cross Shah Rukh Khan’s Pathaan (Rs 1050 crore) given its current pace, but whether it will be able to overhaul Jawan, KGF 2, and RRR (all between Rs 1200-1300 crore) remains to be seen.
