Five policemen, including an officer, were injured in a clash with protesters opposing the J&K authorities’ demolition drive, including that of a mosque, in Kathua district on June 29. An attempt was made to demolish an alleged unlawful mosque that was constructed on government property as the operation's aim. At first, everything seemed like a standard administrative procedure, but things quickly got out of control. The moment the bulldozers started working, the situation got unstable.

In the district's Nagri village, a mosque that was purportedly constructed on state property was destroyed by bulldozers. The majority of the locals, who are nomads from Gujjar-Bakarwal, opposed the destruction by fighting and hurling stones at the police.

In today's DNA, Zee News' Anant Tyagi analysed the growing tendency of bulldozer politics in India's several states and whether it has turned into a tool for political retaliation.

The incident has spurred a great deal of discussion over the usage of bulldozers in these kinds of operations, with varying opinions regarding the demolition's legality and purposes. Some contend that the construction of the mosque amounted to unlawful encroachment, while others interpret the move as political payback.

Hundreds of police and paramilitary personnel have been deployed in the area.

An official stated that the demolition was a normal drive, despite the Gujjar-Bakarwals citing past incidences and accusing the district administration of single-handedly targeting their places of worship.

In the midst of the controversy, Sonia Gandhi vehemently denounced the use of bulldozers on places of worship in a piece that was released today, claiming that BJP-led governments had a history of selectively demolishing these locations. She cited examples from other regions, such as Mandla in Madhya Pradesh and Akbarnagar in Lucknow, highlighting what she saw as the intentional targeting of Muslim businesses next to Hindu ones.

In response to Sonia Gandhi's allegations, BJP leaders have fiercely defended the acts in Kathua and other places as essential measures against unlawful incursions, rejecting any prejudice based on religion. They contend that the goals of these actions are to protect the rule of law and guarantee fair enforcement in all localities.
