Sania Mirza has been the biggest female tennis icon for India over the last two decades. After Mahesh Bhupathi and Leander Paes, it was her and Rohan Bopanna who kept India’s tennis flag flying worldwide. Off the court too, Sania has been a popular figure. But surprisingly, her story has not been told on film yet. For a country that readily makes biopics of sports stars, the absence of Sania’s film is a glaring omission. But it is not as if the film has never been discussed.

When Shah Rukh Khan showed interest in Sania’s biopic

In 2016, superstar Shah Rukh Khan launched Sania Mirza’s biography Ace Against Odds. On that stage, with Sania alongside him, the actor had said he was open to making a film based on the book and even expressed his desire to star in it. “Whenever there is a movie made on Sania, I think it will be very inspiring and it will be fantastic. And I don’t know… ask her if she will let me play her love interest. But, I will produce it for sure,” he had said at the launch. Recently, when Sania appeared on The Great Indian Kapil Show on Netflix, Sania addressed Shah Rukh’s comments and said, “If Shah Rukh ji does the film, I might play myself. And I’ll definitely do it if Akshay Kumar is in it.”

The contenders for playing Sania Mirza in her biopic

Years ago, Sania had appeared on a chat show named Yaaron Ki Baraat hosted by Riteish Deshmukh and Sajid Khan. She was accompanied by her good friend actress Parineeti Chopra on the show. When asked who she would want to play her on screen if a film was made on her life, Sania said, “I was asked if a biopic is made on me, who should play my role. I took Pari's name and I had taken a couple of more names. I said Deepika (Padukone) and her actually. So, I jokingly stated that Deepika is busy because everyone wants her (to do a biopic).”

Why Sania Mirza’s biopic was never made

But despite this interest, a film on Sania’s life and career was never made. In 2018, there was a buzz thet Rohit Shetty was to helm it. However, the tennis star nothing ever became official. Sania told IANS then, “There's obviously been a lot of talk going on and in pipeline. But there's nothing official yet.” As per reports, Sania wanted the combination of a good director and star for her story but that has not materialised yet.
