On the outside, it’s just a night out, but everyone knows how much effort can go into one Saturday night out because of all the complications before- especially when you’re under 18.

Making plans

I don’t know about everyone else, but it somehow feels like I have the most indecisive friends in the world. The most pressing question is almost always “Where do you wanna go?” The where question is debated from Wednesday through Friday, before everyone can finally come to a conclusion. Then, there are the more specific details- whose house are we going to before? Who’s going to pick me up and drop me back? Are we going to get a table there? How much does everyone want to pay? Making plans are seriously never ending, especially in Mumbai, where there’s a new place to go to every Saturday (but everyone still wants to go to the same place we went last week).

The parent inquisition

The older you get, the better this gets, but when you’re a teenager this is probably a little more annoying than the ‘making plans’ part. They ask you a million questions — from who you’re going with, to what time you’re going to be back, and then bargain minutes for how late you can return. “I’ll be back by 2:30”, “No, come back by 12”. The worst is when you ask the more lenient of the two and they say “Ask your (insert *strict parent*)”, who will probably take five days to be convinced, if they even let you go.

The clothes dilemma

Now this is just plain confusing. You have this amazing outfit planned in your head, and then you put it on in real life and can’t even bear to look at yourself twice. You look too fat in 90 per cent of your clothes, and the other 10 per cent you’ve worn too many times. You change at least six outfits before you give up and settle on one that is probably something you’ve worn last week as well, because you realise you just couldn’t care less.

The transport problem

This is absolutely chaotic. You’ve told your mom that your friend is going to pick you up with her driver, but your friend told her mom the same thing, and now you are trying to find someone who can actually get you there. Your parents are against the idea of you hiring a cab (or god forbid, rickshaw), at that time of night, but that’s probably what you’ll end up doing. Mostly, this ends up in the most messed-up situation (like three girls in LBDs alone in a taxi), that would probably get you grounded for weeks if your parents found out.

Getting in

After all that rubbish, this happens. You aren’t 24, and nor is anybody inside that club, but they ask you for your ID. You have to search for a million excuses, call up a friend who knows a friend, and get in after 15 minutes of struggling and convincing. And when they don’t believe you at all, you still end going to some stupid bar right next to it, and have an amazing night.
