Day 4 & 5 of Kolkata Fashion Week

International fashion journalist Suzy Menkes once shared pointers on how to get into a fashion event if you don’t have a pass. She wrote, ‘Buy colored crayons, pens, silver and gold stars…basically, whatever you need to replicate the tickets of those with seats or lurk among invite-holders to memorise their invitations.’ I wish she had shared pointers on surviving one bad fashion show after another!

Day4…yawn! The only designer to stir us from our slumber was Kiran Uttam Ghosh. She showcased kurta-pyjamas, saris, jerseys and ghagras. Georgettes, silk-based fabrics and nets featured some interesting embroidery work. Colours like green, coral, light brown, white and black made for a very interesting colour palette, perfect for a Spring/Summer line.

Pallavi Singhi has assisted Sabyasachi, (aka Pepsi, yes that's his official nickname) before launching her label. Naturally, the pressure to live up to her mentor would have been great. She showcased kurtas with elephant motifs, saris with mirror-work blouses, pink tights and sequined shorts. Checked blouses added some much needed glitz. The verdict: very promising!

Narendra Kumar Ahmed showcased mens and womenswear. The men created an impression with karat-warp style jackets and well-fitted trousers in black. While the ladies walked in bronze, silver, dual-tone jumpsuits, leather skirts, extended waistlines and balloon silhouettes. Didn’t the balloon deflate two seasons ago?

Security going ga ga trying to control the people flowing into the main show area — yes, it was the finale time at the KFW. And the anticipation for Manish Malhotra's show grew. Manish’s theme, a women who has walked out on her wedding! He showcased velvet blouses and georgette dhoti pants in. The colour palette was white, red, black and plum-pink. His trademark paneling was given an interesting twist in fabrics such as crush. For menswear, there were brocade dupatas that caught our eye amongst the paneling detail of the sherwani.

Manish had three showstoppers, Baichung Bhutia who couldn’t stop smiling and sped through what should have been a strut (thought you were playing football, didn’t you Baichung?), Ronit Roy who looked dapper in a sherwani and Amrita Rao who looked pretty in a red lehenga with a beige choli.

The last word: In the five days at the KFW, there were tears, scuffles and bruis, but at the end, everyone knew it was only business.
