Afghanistan are having a tremendous run in the ongoing T20 World Cup 2024 campaign as they qualified for their first-ever semi-final after defeating Bangladesh by 8 runs on Tuesday. With this win, they have also knocked out Australia from the Super 8 stage and are set to play their maiden semi-final match against South Africa on Thursday.

During the match, a controversial incident happened when Gulbadin Naib dramatically fell on his back after head coach Jonathan Trott signalled his players to slow things down.

However, after some time, Naib was back on the field and also went on to take Tanzim Hasan's wicket. Despite the injury, Naib was also seen running fast on the ground. This Afghanistan all-rounder's act drew severe criticism, accusing him of cheating. Commentators including Simon Doull, Pommie Mbangwa and current and former cricketers Ravichandran Ashwin and Michael Vaughan, believed Gulbadin purposely fell to the ground to waste time as Afghanistan was ahead of Bangladesh in DLS par score.

Reacting to the controversial injury, Afghanistan captain Rashid Khan said, "Well, I think he had some cramp. I don't know what happened to him. I don't know what's going on on social media. But, that doesn't matter."

"It's just the on-field injury that comes and then we haven't lost any overs, the rain came and we just went off, it's not something that brought a massive difference in the game. We came back on field after five minutes and there was no massive difference. For me, it's just like a small injury comes in, then you have to take some time," Rashid said at the post-match press conference.

Meanwhile, the T20 World Cup 2024 semi-finals will be played on June 27.

The first semi-final will take place between South Africa and Afghanistan at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy in Trinidad and Tobago on Thursday, starting at 6 AM IST.

Whereas, India will lock horns with defending champions England in the second semi-final match on the same day at the Providence Stadium in Georgetown, starting from 8 PM IST.
