The stars from south Indian film industries have always received some or the other moniker from their fans, from superstar and megastar to Ulaga Nayagan. This emphasises their massive fan following and almost demigod-like status. This popularity and craze has meant that south stars’ films have always managed massive opening days, even dwarfing the biggest Bollywood superstars. One such star has even managed to beat Bollywood biggies with his flops.

The star whose biggest flop beat Pathaan and Animal at box office

Prabhas is the reigning superstar in the Telugu industry. The Rebel Star, as he is called, has worked in some of the biggest films in Telugu cinema history. While he was already a big name down south, the success of the two Baahubali films have made him a pan-India star. This has meant that all his subsequent films have managed massive openings. Adipurush, his mythological epic based on Ramayana, was the most ambitious film of the actor’s career. Mounted on a massive budget of Rs 500 crore, the film also starred Saif Ali Khan and Kriti Sanon. Despite the negativity around it, Adipurush managed a day 1 worldwide haul of Rs 127 crore. This figure is higher than the opening day collection of Bollywood’s biggest hits like Pathaan (Rs 105 crore), Animal (Rs 116 crore), and Gadar 2 (Rs 54 crore).

However, due to negative word of mouth and dismal reviews, Adipurush tanked at the box office after this stellar opening. Eventually, it failed to even cross Rs 350 crore worldwide and ended up one of Indian cinema’s biggest box office bombs ever. All that despite the massive opening led by Prabhas. Prabhas’ new film Kalki 2898 AD is releasing in theatres on Thursday (June 27) and is again expected to take a massive opening with some projections giving it a Rs 200-crore opening day.

Prabhas’ star power and fees

The box office failures of some of his recent films have not hurt Prabhas. Even as Saaho, Adipurush, and Radhe Shyam underperformed at the box office, Prabhas’ stardom remained unblemished. The actor pulled back some momentum for himself last year with the success of Salaar Part One. For the film, the actor reportedly charged a hefty fees of Rs 120 crore, one of the highest in India right now. In fact, barring the exception of Shah Rukh Khan, Vijay, and Rajinikanth, Prabhas is the highest-paid star in India right now, charging more than even Salman Khan, Allu Arjun, Aamir Khan, and Akshay Kumar per film.
