A young woman in Hamburg faces prison for insulting a rapist involved in a shocking gang rape case.
A recent case in Hamburg, Germany has drawn global attention after a young woman was sentenced to prison for insulting a man involved in the gang rape of a 15-year-old girl. This incident, which occurred in 2020, shocked many when it was revealed that most of the perpetrators received suspended sentences, with only one sentenced to youth prison for nearly three years, and one acquitted.
The 20-year-old woman from Hamburg faced legal consequences after making what the court termed as "hateful" remarks towards one of the rapists, who remains at large and hasn't served jail time. According to reports, she found his contact details online and used WhatsApp to insult him, calling him a "dishonourable rapist pig" and a "disgusting freak." She also threatened him with physical harm.
Last week, the Hamburg-Wandsbek District Court convicted her of insulting and threatening the rapist. She was sentenced to a weekend in detention at the Hahnöfersand youth detention centre, which is longer than the suspended sentence the man received. Her verdict, however, is not yet final.
The young woman, aspiring to become a nurse, had a prior record for minor theft, involving items worth less than 25 euros that is 40 dollars.
Meanwhile, authorities in Hamburg are reportedly investigating 140 cases related to insults, threats, or negative statements directed at the rapists.
The gang rape incident itself was harrowing, involving ten men accused of assaulting the intoxicated teenage girl over two and a half hours in a park. Prosecutors stated that four men led the girl into a bush and sexually assaulted her against her will, while one stole her phone and wallet. Despite video evidence of some of the assaults, which was later deleted, and the diverse nationalities of the accused (including German and foreign nationals), most received suspended sentences and community service mandates.
