Nag Ashwin’s Kalki 2898 AD has taken a historic opening at the box office. The dystopian sci-fi film banked on the star power of Prabhas as well as some positive word of mouth to cross Rs 100 crore net in India on its first day alone. While the final numbers are not out, trade pundits are estimating that the film has registered the third biggest opening in Indian cinema history.

Trade tracker Sacnilk has reported that Kalki has earned an estimated Rs 100 crore net in India on its opening day. Most other trade pundits agree that the film will earn Rs 120-130 crore gross in India and Rs 60 crore gross overseas, giving it a monumental opening day figure of Rs 190 crore. If this is indeed the final figure, it puts Kalki’s opening day behind only two Indian films – Baahubali 2 and RRR – both directed by SS Rajamouli.

Kalki 2898 AD’s stellar show has put it past some other recent blockbusters though, as it has managed to comfortably beat the first day hauls of KGF Chapter 2 (Rs 159 crore), Jawan (Rs 129 crore), Adipurush (Rs 127 crore), Animal (Rs 115 crore), and Pathaan (Rs 105 crore).

However, the film seems to have failed to cross the Rs 200-crore mark on its opening day, something many had hoped it would. That means that SS Rajamouli remains the only director to achieved that, and he has done that twice. But Nag Ashwin’s film will have a chance to beat the weekend collections of the Rajamouli-directorials given that it has an extended-four day weekend. Trade pundits are banking on a Rs 600-crore weekend for the film and a Rs 1000+ crore lifetime run.

Kalki 2898 AD is set in Kashi of the 29th century. The film calls it the last city on Earth where the Ganga river has also dried up. Prabhas plays a bounty hunter named Bhairava who is out to catch Sum-80 (Deepika), a pregnant woman believed to be carrying the prophesised Kalki avatar of Lord Vishnu. Protecting her is Ashwatthama (Amitabh Bachchan) while the forces of the evil tyrant Yaskin (Kamal Haasan) are also on their toes.
