Constant delays and failures on Central Railway (CR) line have forced rail commuters to demand a road running parallel to rail tracks between Thane and Kalyan. They have written to Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari on the same. On July 2 and 3, one saw unprecedented chaos on CR when most trains were cancelled. July 4 also witnessed many cancellations.

On July 3, passenger associations from Thane-Diva stretch wrote an email to Gadkari for constructing a road network between Thane and Kalyan stations. This road, should ideally run parallel to the rail network so that people can easily shift to roadways in case of any trouble on rail lines.

Excerpts of the letter to Nitin Gadkari state:  “You have been successfully providing roads across the country. However, for middle-class people travelling on Thane-Kalyan route are forced to hang dangerously in local trains out of fear to lose his/her job or deduction of salaries for reaching late; without fearing for his life. We feel that a parallel road next to tracks on the Thane-Kalyan belt is a vital step.”

The passengers’ associations state that technical failures on CR are not a new thing — right from cases of rail fractures, signal failures, OHE failures, water logging on tracks derails the train services time and again.

“At present, there is no direct road route available to commute from Thane to Kalyan. The one available is a long detour and is a costly affair; which dissuades people from using it,” said Aadesh Bhagat, president of Diva Railway Passenger Association who also wrote this email.
