Indian Railways issued a statement on Wednesday to address a media report about a tragic incident involving a passenger who died after an upper berth fell on him during a train journey. The incident occurred last week on the Ernakulam-Hazrat Nizamuddin Millennium Superfast Express (12645), affecting a 62-year-old passenger named Ali Khan.

Khan was traveling in the sleeper coach when the upper berth, occupied by another passenger, suddenly collapsed onto him. Khan was resting on the lower berth at the time, and the impact of the falling berth, along with the weight of the other passenger, caused him significant injuries.

Railway authorities immediately took action to help Khan. At around 6:34 pm on June 15, 2024, the on-duty station master at Ramagundam station received a message about the accident. The train made an unscheduled stop at Ramagundam, and an ambulance was arranged. Khan was quickly transferred from the train to the ambulance and taken to a nearby hospital in Hyderabad. Despite the prompt medical assistance, Khan succumbed to his injuries while undergoing surgery.

In their clarification, Indian Railways emphasized that the accident was not due to a faulty berth. According to their investigation, the upper berth fell because the passenger occupying it had not properly secured it with the provided chains. The Railway Ministry spokesperson explained, "The concerned passenger was traveling on seat no. 57 (lower berth) of the S/6 coach. The upper berth seat fell down due to improper placement of the chain. The seat fell because the passenger did not properly lock the upper berth using the chains."

The Railways expressed their condolences and reiterated the importance of following safety protocols to prevent such accidents. They stressed that passengers should always ensure upper berths are correctly secured with the chains provided to avoid similar incidents in the future.
