Xiaomi unveiled the new MIUI 7 Global version in New Delhi today, a week after it launched the Chinese ROM in Beijing, and it has quite a few little nibblets packed in.

First up are four new overarching UI themes, that you can pick from on your first startup: Rose, Pink Blush, Ocean Breeze, and High Life. More will also be available online.

If none of those suit you, you can also use Muse to make your own themes.

On the performance end, Xiaomi says MIUI 7 has improved startup times, and is 30 percent faster than MIUI 6. And believe me, that is a very noticeable difference. See for yourself.

Battery optimisation has also improved. MIUI 7 restricts background data usage to give you at least 10 percent more battery life in your daily use. There's also a new introduction of XXL text, for people who find the smaller text hard to read. XXL will work with Hindi text messages as well, and even in your other apps.

There's a special "Baby Album" in your photo gallery, where baby pictures are grouped together. Why, you ask? "Why not?", says Xiaomi. Okay. And speaking of babies, there's a Child Mode, where you can restrict access to your emails and messages, while "whitelisting" apps and games to keep your kid entertained. If you're minus the kids but plus a Mi Band, your phone will automatically go into Do Not Disturb mode when your Mi Band detects you have fallen asleep.

Another fun new addition is Showtime. Record a five-second video loop, and it'll play in place of your contact photo when you call someone. Of course, this only works between two MIUI users, but it should still be fun to see in action. And then, there's something Hugo Barra was talking about at the Mi4i launch event a few months ago; Interactive Visual Response (IVR). This basically takes all the audio prompts from a customer service call and puts them on your screen, with clickable buttons. No more wading through the list of press 1 for this and press 2 for that, now you have the entire prompt tree at your fingertips. And yes, Xiaomi has tied up with 50 Indian services to get access to their prompt lists, including Citibank, ICICI Bank. Spicejet, Indigo, and Tata Sky.

The MIUI 7 Beta will be available Monday, August 24, and will be  supported on all Xiaomi devices launched in India.
