In Kruger National Park, a pride of lions enjoyed an unexpected meal when an old hyena approached them without resistance, captured in rare footage by safari enthusiast Marissa Weide.
In an unexpected turn of events, a pride of lions in Kruger National Park, South Africa, enjoyed an easy meal when an old hyena seemingly surrendered to them. Marissa Weide, a safari enthusiast, captured this rare incident on camera during a recent game drive on H4-1.
"We left the camp as early as we could and were excited to get the day going," Weide shared with Latest Sightings. "The safari started slow, and we didn’t see much until we neared a popular picnic site, where we came across some lions in the road!"
Weide's footage begins with two male lions, one of whom appeared unwell, while a couple of lionesses were spotted ahead. Just as the group was about to move on, a lone hyena emerged from the bushes, approaching the lionesses.
The video shows the lions instantly going into "ambush mode" while the hyena remains unperturbed. According to Weide, neither she nor her companions had ever witnessed such an event, and even the lions seemed momentarily confused.
It took only a moment for one of the lionesses to pounce, grabbing the hyena by the throat. With the hyena not putting up any defense, the lioness's companion left her to finish the job.
"The male lions arrived, and the lioness held onto the hyena’s jugular until she was satisfied," Weide explained. "Eventually, she moved on with the healthier male, leaving the hyena and the other male lion behind."
Amazingly, the hyena was still alive, but the ill male lion had already begun eating it, ensuring there was no chance of escape.
Hyenas and lions, both apex predators, often clash as they are territorial and compete for similar prey such as wildebeest, zebra, and gazelle. This incident underscores the ongoing hostility and complex dynamics between these rival species.
