As soon as the government was formed, the race for the speaker and deputy speaker started. Initially, the opposition tried to make TDP insist on the speaker's post. But when this did not happen, the opposition changed track and Congress itself insisted on taking the deputy speaker's post. It also put a condition that if the deputy's post was not given, it would contest the speaker's election.

For the last three days, Defense Minister Rajnath Singh was holding several meetings. Tuesday was the last day for the nomination of the speaker. There was a meeting on June 25 as well. Things went wrong in the last 1 hour.

The ruling BJP-led NDA has fielded previous Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla for the crucial parliamentary position again. But its bid for a consensus was thwarted by the Opposition which forced an election by nominating Kodikunnil Suresh as its candidate.

Speaker from the ruling party and Deputy Speaker from the opposition - this has been just a tradition, not a system. The question here is that if the opposition does not have the numbers, then why does it want to contest the Speaker's election? And if the ruling party also gives it the post of Deputy Speaker, then what does it lose?

Opposition's message:

  • Modi's coalition government will have to face a test at every step for 5 years.
  • This is a trailer that the opposition will not let decisions be taken by voice vote like the last 2 terms.
  • If NDA gets less than 293 votes, the message will be that the government is 'unstable'.

NDA government's message:

  • It will not let the opposition hijack the Parliament on the strength of 235.
  • The government and the Parliament will run by the rules, decisions will be taken based on majority.
  • If there is cross-voting in the Opposition, it will mean that the Opposition is still scattered.
  • Hence, on Wednesday at 11 am, the Speaker's election is on the track of confrontation. The result will decide who will have a say in the House.
