As soon as the government was formed, the race for the speaker and deputy speaker started. Initially, the opposition tried to make TDP insist on the speaker's post. But when this did not happen, the opposition changed track and Congress itself insisted on taking the deputy speaker's post. It also put a condition that if the deputy's post was not given, it would contest the speaker's election.
For the last three days, Defense Minister Rajnath Singh was holding several meetings. Tuesday was the last day for the nomination of the speaker. There was a meeting on June 25 as well. Things went wrong in the last 1 hour.
The ruling BJP-led NDA has fielded previous Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla for the crucial parliamentary position again. But its bid for a consensus was thwarted by the Opposition which forced an election by nominating Kodikunnil Suresh as its candidate.
Speaker from the ruling party and Deputy Speaker from the opposition - this has been just a tradition, not a system. The question here is that if the opposition does not have the numbers, then why does it want to contest the Speaker's election? And if the ruling party also gives it the post of Deputy Speaker, then what does it lose?
