When President Draupadi Murmu reached Parliament House on Thursday for her speech, the Sengol was also included in the protocol of welcoming her. A senior marshal of the Lok Sabha was walking ahead of the President carrying the Sengol. After the President took the seat, the Sengol was placed back in its place.

But now the Sengol is bothering the opposition parties, they do not want to see it in the Parliament. Samajwadi MP from Uttar Pradesh's Mohanlalganj, RK Chaudhary, has written a letter to the Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla after taking the oath. He requested to get the Sengol removed, saying that this sceptre is a symbol of monarchy and parliament is a temple of democracy, not a palace of any king or prince.

The Sengol was installed in the new Parliament by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 28 May last year. 20 Mahants of Adhinam Math of Tamil Nadu had installed it with full rituals. The Sengol was a symbol of the transfer of power from the British to India in 1947. It is derived from the Tamil word 'Semmai', which means rule according to policy. In later years, it was in the museum, PM Modi had discovered it.

At the time of the establishment of the Sengol, Prime Minister Modi had said that it was not just a symbol of power but also a symbol of a king being just and devoted to the people. The Opposition is now again pulling at the same words and asking whether Prime Minister Modi considers himself a king? NDA's answer to this is that the opposition is just pretending in the name of the Constitution, and the opposition to the Sengol is also the same.
