The upcoming India vs Pakistan match in the ongoing ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, scheduled for Sunday, will serve as a crucial test for the game’s governing body. This match comes at a time when the sport is in need of redemption following issues with poor drop-in pitches and exorbitant ticket prices. Led by Rohit Sharma, Team India will face off against Babar Azam’s Pakistan at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium in New York.
Anticipation is high as fans and experts speculate on how Rohit Sharma and his team will handle the challenge posed by Shaheen Afridi and Mohammad Amir during the powerplay. Shaheen Afridi's exceptional performance in the 2021 edition in Dubai led to Pakistan's historic victory over India. However, in the world of cricket, past achievements can sometimes hold little significance, or conversely, carry immense weight. The rivalry between India and Pakistan transcends mere statistics, often defying conventional sporting analysis based on recent form, mental state, or historical outcomes.
This match marks the eighth meeting between the two teams in the T20 World Cup, with India having suffered defeat only once. Their first encounter dates back to the 2007 T20 World Cup group stage, where India emerged victorious in a thrilling bowl-out after the match ended in a tie. India went on to secure a five-run victory over Pakistan, ultimately claiming the inaugural title.
FOUR! Naseem keeps Pakistan in the game with a boundary. With 12 runs required off 2 balls, Naseem must hit two sixes to secure victory. Arshdeep delivers to Naseem, and it's another FOUR! Naseem expertly guides the ball over cover. Despite Virat Kohli's efforts, India cannot prevent the boundary. Now, only 8 runs are needed off the final ball, and Arshdeep executes a perfect yorker. India emerges victorious in this thrilling contest!
IND 119 (19)
PAK 113/7 (20)
Hardik Pandya makes his return to the field. Rizwan manages to score a single off the first delivery. Hardik delivers a crucial blow to Fakhar, resulting in his dismissal. This wicket is a significant breakthrough for India.
A loud LBW appeal was made on the first ball, but it was not given. Rohit Sharma decided to review the decision. The delivery drifted in and then turned slightly to clip Usman's back pad. The decision was overturned as the ball was shown to be hitting the off-stump. Usman had no choice but to walk back to the pavilion.
Siraj is set to bowl his third over. Usman drives the ball to mid-off, resulting in a dot-ball. However, he is beaten on the next delivery as he attempts to cut too close to his body, missing the ball that nips back in slightly. Usman manages to pull the following delivery to deep square-leg, earning a single.
Mohammed Siraj is bowling from the other end. A magnificent on-drive by Babar results in the first boundary for Pakistan.
Siraj delivers a stunning delivery that deceives Rizwan, causing the ball to straighten slightly and leaving the batter exposed.
Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan will open the batting for the team, facing Arshdeep Singh's bowling. Babar Azam drives the ball through the covers for three runs. The next delivery sees Babar adding three more runs to his tally with a well-executed shot square of the wicket.
Siraj struck the ball towards mid-off and immediately called for a run. Unfortunately, Arshdeep hesitated in responding, resulting in a delayed start. The throw reached the wicketkeeper before Arshdeep could make it back to safety, leading to his runout.
Pandya is out as he picks the ball towards square leg and is caught in the deep by a fielder. An excellent running catch is taken by Iftikhar.
OUT! Bumrah is dismissed for a duck on the very first ball as he drives the ball straight into the hands of the fielder at cover.
Pant attempted to hit the ball straight, but unfortunately, he mistimed his shot resulting in a simple catch for the fielder at long off. This wicket has put India in a precarious position.
Ravindra Jadeja enters the field, only to be dismissed on the very first ball as he chips it straight to short cover, resulting in a first ball duck.
Pant confidently executes a well-placed shot over the covers, easily securing a boundary as all fielders are positioned on the off side. With finesse, Pant successfully executes a ramp shot over fine leg, adding another four runs to the scoreboard. Utilizing the angle expertly, Pant sends the ball through fine leg for yet another boundary.
FOUR! Pant confidently plays a powerful drive, resulting in a thick edge that eludes the first slip fielder. Pant then sends a leading edge over the covers, where Usman Khan attempts to catch it but narrowly misses, allowing three runs. Axar follows up with a well-placed shot to third man for a single. Another FOUR! Pant manages to edge the ball once again, this time flying over the slip fielder.
SIX! Rohit picks it up off his pads once more, using a cross-batted shot to effectively get the job done. The fourth delivery is wider, staying low, and Rohit wisely chooses to let it go. Rohit then proceeds to block the fifth delivery as well.
Pakistan (Playing XI): Mohammad Rizwan(w), Babar Azam(c), Usman Khan, Fakhar Zaman, Shadab Khan, Iftikhar Ahmed, Imad Wasim, Shaheen Afridi, Haris Rauf, Naseem Shah, Mohammad Amir

Babar Azam: We will bowl first because of the weather and moisture in the pitch. The conditions suit us, we have four fast bowlers. We will try to use it to our best. Past is past, we are looking forward to today's match, we are ready and will give our 100%. Always a big game, our confidence is always high for India vs Pak. Azam Khan is resting.
Rohit Sharma: Would've bowled first too. We need to assess how conditions play and come up with an idea of what a good score is. Those games have helped us assess conditions here. We've spoken about what we need to do as a batting unit to get a good score and then we've got the bowling unit to defend. Every game is important in a World Cup, you can't just show up. Anything can happen. We're sticking to the same XI.
