The T20 World Cup-winning Indian cricket team finally departed for Delhi aboard a charter flight from the Grantley Adams International Airport on Wednesday. They had been stranded for three days due to a category 4 hurricane. The Air India special charter flight AIC24WC -- Air India Champions 24 World Cup -- took off around 4:50 am local time and is set to land in Delhi on Thursday at around 6:20 am IST.

Captain Rohit Sharma shared his excitement by posting 'Coming home' on Instagram, posing with the trophy inside the aircraft. The Indian squad, support staff, players' families, board officials, and travelling media were all aboard the flight arranged by the BCCI. 

The team clinched the title with a thrilling seven-run win over South Africa in the finals. India clinched the T20 World Cup title after 17 years, defeating South Africa by seven runs in a thrilling final on June 29.

The Boeing 777, which originally took off from New Jersey, USA, landed in Barbados at 2 am local time. Airport staff noted it as the largest plane they had seen. Originally scheduled to leave earlier, the team's departure was delayed due to the plane's late landing.

In a show of commendation, Prime Minister Narendra Modi contacted the Indian cricket team on Sunday, celebrating their T20 World Cup victory.

The team will be felicitated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi within hours of their return. A roadshow in Mumbai is also planned to celebrate the end of an 11-year trophy drought. 

For the unversed, Hurricane Beryl is now heading towards Jamaica.
