Smartphone users across India are receiving an ‘Emergency Alert’ on the screens leaving them confused. The phone suddenly starts ringing and an alert message issued by the Department of Telecommunication (DoT) appears on the screen. To be clear, this is just a test message and there’s nothing to worry about. This is a test of the government's initiative where it aims to alert citizens in case of a disaster or emergency. Although it wasn’t a real emergency this time, the alert message news has left Apple iPhone users concerned as they didn’t receive warning from the government. The government alert has been received by people who use Android phones only.

The reason Apple iPhone users in India didn’t get the alert may be because it was a test. As per Apple’s support page, users can receive Test Emergency Alerts in the United States if the feature is enabled by users. The company’s website doesn’t mention anything about test alerts support in India. Other than the test alerts, users can receive emergency, government and public safety alerts on your iPhone in various regions across the globe. By default, Government Alerts are turned on for Apple iPhones. When users receive a government alert, they will hear a special sound that’s similar to an alarm.

It is worth noting that government alerts are supported when using a SIM card from a supported network provider and in some countries or regions, you may not be able to disable government alerts. For those who haven’t seen it, the test alert message from DoT reads, “This is a SAMPLE TESTING MESSAGE sent through Cell Broadcasting System by Department of Telecommunication, Government of India. Please ignore this message as no action is required from your end. This message has been sent to test Pan-India Emergency Alert System being implemented by National Disaster Management Authority. It aims to enhance public safety and provide timely alerts during emergencies.”
