One of the greatest openers in cricket history, David Warner has finally retired from international cricket after Australia failed to reach the T20 World Cup 2024 semi-final stage.

After suffering a 24-run loss to India on Monday, Australia needed Bangladesh to beat Afghanistan in the final Super 8 match today. But in an exciting contest, the Rashid Khan-led side ended up beating Bangladesh by 8 runs and advanced to their first-ever T20 World Cup semi-final.

Warner had announced his retirement from Tests and ODIs earlier this year. The opening star batter had already confirmed that the T20 World Cup 2024 would be his last international outing for Australia.

In his last match played against India, Warner was dismissed for 6 runs off 6 balls by Arshdeep Singh.

Although hinting at a potential return for the upcoming 2025 Champions Trophy, it is unlikely as he ended his ODI career with his last match when Australia lifted the 2023 ODI World Cup trophy in India. His final Test was played against Pakistan in early 2024 and was set to finally retire after the T20 World Cup campaign.

Warner made his T20I debut against South Africa in 2009 where he smashed 89 from 43 balls. In his T20I career, he appeared in 110 matches and scored 3277 runs including 28 fifties and one century. His highest T20I score was an unbeaten 100 runs against Pakistan in 2019, which made him the third Aussie batter to score a century across all formats.

Meanwhile, the T20 World Cup 2024 semi-finals will take place on June 27.

The first semi-final will be played between South Africa and Afghanistan at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy in Trinidad and Tobago on Thursday, starting at 6 AM IST.

On the other hand, India will lock horns with defending champions England in the second semi-final match on the same day at the Providence Stadium in Georgetown, starting from 8 PM IST.
