Looking to conduct multi-party conference calls and want to do it for free? Here’s an app that might be just the ticket
Japan’s Line corporation, creator of the eponymous app that offers free calling and messaging, announced the a new group calling app called ‘Popcorn Buzz’. The title feature of this app is its ability to let up to 200 participants converse simultaneously.
This free app is aimed at both personal and business use cases, where multiple parties need to connect with several members within a conference call scenario. The company claims that this free service is “a perfect replacement for paid business-grade conference call services.”
Group calls can be made using the app, over any active Internet connection on the Android device including WiFi, 3G and 4G (with the user’s pre-existing Internet usage charges applying.)
Initiating a Popcorn Buzz conversation is done by choosing a username and uploading a profile picture. Then by sending out each group caller’s unique URL over any communication method of choice (email, SMS, even Whatsapp), they can immediately start making calls with other participants. For existing users of the original Line calling and messaging app, their account gets automatically synchronized to their friend’s list in the app, which they can tap into for initiating group calls instantly. While running, the app displays all participating members’ profile pictures and indicates the currently speaking person using a little green dot against their photo.
Currently available only on Android, there is an iOS version in the works with additional functionality such as video chat and interconnectivity with groups created in the Line app.
