Amidst a concerning surge in dengue cases across Bengaluru city's Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) limits, health officials have reported over 1,000 cases in the past three weeks alone. This marks a significant increase compared to last June's figures, highlighting a pressing public health issue in the region.

The rise in dengue cases comes alongside the news that BBMP Chief Commissioner Tushar Girinath has tested positive for the viral disease, underscoring the severity of the situation. Dengue, transmitted by Aedes mosquitoes, can lead to severe symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, pain behind the eyes, joint and muscle pain, and in some cases, hemorrhagic fever which can be life-threatening.

Maintaining a healthy platelet count is crucial during such outbreaks to support the body's ability to fight the infection and manage symptoms effectively. Here are key tips to help boost and maintain platelet levels:

Hydration: Drink plenty of fluids such as water, coconut water, and herbal teas to stay hydrated. Proper hydration supports blood circulation and helps maintain healthy platelet levels.

Nutritious Diet: Consume a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains. Include foods high in vitamin C (like oranges, strawberries, and bell peppers) and vitamin K (such as leafy greens like spinach and kale), which are important for platelet production and function.

Papaya Leaf Extract: Some studies suggest that papaya leaf extract may help increase platelet counts in dengue patients. Consult a healthcare provider before using any herbal supplements.

Avoid Aspirin: During dengue fever, avoid medications like aspirin and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) which can affect platelet function and increase the risk of bleeding.

Mosquito Prevention: Prevent mosquito bites by using insect repellents, wearing protective clothing, and using mosquito nets or screens. Eliminate stagnant water sources around your home to reduce mosquito breeding.
