Mona Singh was born on October 8, 1981, into a Sikh family in Chandigarh. Her father, an Army officer, meant that her family moved frequently, and she is an alumna of Kendriya Vidyalaya Vayusena Nagar in Nagpur.

Mona Singh made her Hindi television debut with Jassi Jaissi Koi Nahin (2003–06) on Sony Entertainment Television, where she gained fame as Jasmeet Jassi Walia. With her Jassi Jaissi Koi Nahin performance, Mona Singh established herself as one of the leading and highest-paid actresses in Hindi television. In 2012, she ranked 97th on Forbes India's Celebrity 100 list with an estimated annual income of Rs 22.5 million (US$270,000).

When she was not allowed to reveal her identity:

In one of the interviews, the actress talked about how she was not allowed to reveal her face in public, or do waxing. While speaking to Mirchi Plus, Mona Singh revealed, “I was not allowed to do waxing, no threading, no eyebrows, and they would stick more hair on my face. I was not allowed to bleach my face. These were the too many restrictions that I was asked to follow to match up to Jassi.”

She added, “Contracts were very strict at that point of time. I couldn’t tell anyone how I looked in real life or who I am or what my name is? The first ever award that I bagged for the show was as Jasmeet Walia and I did not get it as Mona Singh. I used to wonder when people get to know me and look at me. But it was another high to be Jassi as the show was very popular.”

The actress once discussed casting couch experience

According to The Times of India, she said, “I’ve had really bad experiences... There were multiple men who once called me to a hotel room and I went. They were looking at me everywhere except for my face, it made me very uncomfortable. They even said that it’s a very normal thing in the industry to compromise and do what the directors tell you to.”
